- The original reference to tar mentioned /etc/rmt, a remote tape device
- available in some versions of BSD Unix. GNU Tar comes with an implementation
- of the rmt code, and the capability for the client to talk to it. The
- communication takes place via sockets. In fact, when the original posting
- happened I thought for an instant that a Windows/WinSock tar which did this
- would be a Very Fine Thing Indeed - then I remembered that I wouldn't have
- time to work on it in the forseeable future. Hopefully someone else will?
-
- Of course, you are correct that the normal archiving stuff has no connection
- to sockets.
